Introduction to the Multi-functional Shaking Tables Lab of Tongji University
The “Multi-functional Shaking Tables Lab” of Tongji University was supported by the 985-project program (phase II) of Ministry of Education. The building construction and facilities installation was completed in 2011. The Multi-functional Shaking Tables Lab consists of 2 areas: 1) the multiple shaking tables testing area and 2) the strong floor and reaction wall testing area.
Multiple Shaking Tables Testing System
The multiple shaking tables testing system is composed of A (side table 30ton), B (main table 70ton), C (main table 70ton), D (side table 30ton) four shaking tables, two trenches (70m and 30m in length respectively) and one reaction wall.
Specific working modes
All four tables are moveable within the first 70 meter trench and work as a large linear shaking table array. Tables can work in same way or with relative motion.
Two of these tables can be placed in the second 30meters trench and are moveable throughout its length. Four tables can work as a rectangular shaking table array. Multiple shaking tables can work in same way or with relative motion.
Two main tables (B,C table) can be combined into a large shaking table used as a single shaking table.

The Multiple Shaking Tables Testing System, with a total testing capacity of 200ton, will be among the largest and most capable multiple shaking tables systems in the world. With the completion of the system, a world-class multi-purpose earthquake simulation platform for the vibration and seismic testing research of bridge engineering, building and spatial structure engineering, underground structure engineering and lifeline engineering will be developed.
Strong Floor and Reaction Wall Testing Area
The Multi-functional Shaking Tables Lab features one of the largest strong floor and reaction wall systems in the world. The T-shape reaction wall is 30m long and 15m high, with shear strength of 600ton (at the top level of reaction wall) and overall bending moment strength of 9000ton-m. The strong floor covers an area of 60m long and 15m wide, with designed vertical capacity of 150ton in 3m*3m area.
With the large testing area dimension and loading capacity, the lab represents a unique tool for static, pseudo static, and pseudo dynamic testing of large to full scale structure models.
